Ceramide makes up important part of the skin barrier
Ceramide is like the mortar in cement. You need sufficient quantity and the right ratio of materials (sand, water, cement) to make a good mortar. A good skin barrier repair cream must be ceramide dominant and studies have shown that the ratio of 3:1:1 between the different types of lipids is optimal for skin barrier repair.
Lack of Ceramide damages the function of the skin barrier!
Lack of essential skin lipids (ceramide, cholesterol and free fatty acids) will aggregately loss of moisture of the skin, resulting in dry skin with cracks.
