Osteoporosis is a metabolic bone disease characterized by a decrease in bone mineral density, which makes the bone structure weak and increases the risk of fractures. Osteoporosis is often not discovered until a fracture occurs. It typically appears in women after menopause, when estrogen levels significantly decrease, leading to a marked decline in bone mineral density. Due to their naturally lighter and thinner bone structure, women are at a four times higher risk of developing osteoporosis compared to their male counterparts of the same age.

Bone density testing utilizes two different energy X-rays to analyze the bone mineral density (BMD) of the lumbar spine and hip, assessing the extent of bone loss in the body. The radiation dose required for the test is very low, and the entire process is safe, painless, and quick, taking about 30 minutes. This is currently the most commonly used method for diagnosing osteoporosis.

Early identification of bone loss allows for the development of personalized prevention and treatment plans to improve bone health.

Bone Density Testing Guidelines

Only applicable for individuals aged 18 and above.
Not suitable for pregnant women.
On the day of testing, please avoid taking calcium supplements (including prescription and over-the-counter medications).
If you have undergone a barium meal, CT scan with contrast, MRI with contrast, or radioactive isotope tests within the past week, please refrain from testing.
Wear loose and comfortable clothing without metal on the day of testing.
